Two men rescued from Epping trench collapse stable


Two men have been rescued after becoming trapped in a four-metre deep trench on a construction site in Epping.

A man in his 20s was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with a suspected leg injury.  The second man, in his 50s, sustained crush injuries and is in a stable condition in hospital.

Specialist trench rescue firefighters and trench trained paramedics performed the rescue with assistance from other emergency service personell.

The construction site 513 High St – north of Childs Rd – is the future home of a four-storey aged care facility.

1.39pm: Two men have been trapped by dirt after a four-metre deep trench collapsed on a High St, Epping building site around midday. At 1.30pm the two men remain trapped.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) specialist trench rescue operators and an Ambulance Victoria trench trained paramedic are currently working to free the trapped workers.

The rescue is expected to take some time as firefighters work to install shoring and protective measures to prevent a further collapse during the rescue.

Paramedics are also in attendance monitoring the welfare of the two men. Injuries at this time are unknown.

Police are in attendance and Worksafe have been notified to attend.
