Damaging winds predicted ahead of cold front

UPDATED 7pm:The Bureau of Meteorology continues with a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in elevated parts of Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts..

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) advises a strong cold front is currently moving through Victoria with damaging winds averaging 40 to 60 km/h with gusts to 100 km/h forecast for Central and parts of East Gippsland, South West, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

10pm. Statewide Severe Weather Warning

Severe thunderstorms throughout Victoria are likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours.

A strong cold front associated with a deepening low over the Southern Ocean is expected to enter western Victoria tonight and cross the remainder of Victoria overnight and early on Monday, introducing a vigorous westerly airstream across Victoria.

Thunderstorms possible by 4pm

The Bureau Of Meteorolgy (BoM) predicts a gusty south-westerly change will hit Melbourne (CBD) around 3.30pm this afternoon. The change may make fires difficult to control and they may break containment lines.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning and Road Weather Alert issued by BoM

5:30pm UPDATE: The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 5:20 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Belgrave, Camberwell, Caulfield, Frankston, Lang Lang, Melton and waters off Brighton beach. These thunderstorms are moving towards the southeast. They are forecast to affect Dandenong, Glen Waverley and Williamstown by 5:50 pm and KooWeeRup, Pakenham and South Pakenham by 6:20 pm.
