Council urges Shire residents to get their hands dirty

Murrindindi Shire Council is encouraging residents to get their gloves on and get involved in the Clean Up Australia Day (CUAD) events in Murrindindi Shire this Friday, March 2 and Sunday, March 4.

Nationally, Clean Up Australia Day is Sunday, March 4, 2018.

Council’s Natural Environment and Climate Change Portfolio Councillor Rebecca Bowles said Murrindindi Shire’s natural environment is a reason visitors come here and residents love living here.

“Murrindindi Shire Council and Upper Goulburn Landcare Network have collaborated in the past and will work together again this year at events in the Shire,” Cr Bowles said.

“Last year’s CUAD Shire participants bagged 565 kilograms (kg) of dumped rubbish.  All of this rubbish should have been disposed of properly and most of it could have been recycled.

“The rubbish collected included 440 kilograms of recyclable material (300 kg steel and 140 kg of mixed recyclables), 45 kilograms  of general waste and 80 kilograms of tyres.

“During Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ campaign last year, our communities said they really love the natural beauty of our Shire.  No one wants to see dumped rubbish spoiling that beauty,” she added.

“Our children are learning from an early age to clean up their rubbish so perhaps we need to take a page out of their book as it’s clearly adults dumping tyres and steel.

“Clean up Australia Day highlights the need for all of us – visitors and residents alike – to do the right thing and dispose of our waste properly so one day we won’t need to hold these events. So why not sign up as a family and make a day of it as it’s a great way to pass on this message to our children,” Cr Bowles said.

This year Clean Up Australia Day events in Murrindindi Shire are being held on March 2 and 4.

Events on Friday, March 2:

  • Bollygum Park at Kinglake
  • Scenic Reserve at Murrindindi.

Events on Sunday, March 4:

  • Local Strath Creek at Strath Creek,
  • Yea Angling Club at Ghin Ghin
  • Yea Wetlands at Yea.
