On this day … in 1909

The Evelyn Observer and Bourke East Record, Friday, September 24, 1909

A very pleasing function took place at State School No. 2188, Kinglake, on Tuesday, the 11th inst., it being the distribution of prizes. The school room was prettily decorated by the scholars.

Mr H. V. Kerr, in a few chosen remarks, presented the books which were exceptionally handsome volumes. Special prizes were awarded to John Wright for best kept exercise, Burtha Kerr for amiability, and the dux of the school, Sylvia Lyng.

The children contributed a musical program under the direction of Mrs Worboise, the head teacher, who is to be congratulated on the efficiency of the scholars. Hearty cheers were called for and given for the teacher, Mr H. V. Kerr and Master Bert. Wright, who very nicely, on behalf of the teachers and scholars thanked Mr. Kerr for distributing the prizes.

The Boy Scouts are going ahead here.

Last Saturday a football match was played between two teams representing Kinglake and Kinglake Central. Mr Jas. Alexander kindly acted as umpire and a very fair game was played.

The Exton boys (3) showed a good knowledge of the game and gained the victory for their side. Burt. Wright and Clarrie Murphy played a good game for the losing side. The scores were-Kinglake Central, 12 goals 8 behinds; Kinglake, 8 goals 5 behinds.

Next Saturday, Mr H.V. Kerr, scout master, will give an address, “Some Victorian birds and their eggs.” Mr Kerr has a large collection of birds, eggs and the scouts are looking forward to the address. Bert. Wright holds the badge for best marksmanship in rifle shooting.
